WinGD will be using its KORMARINE platform to present the latest advances in its clean-fuel capable engine portfolio. Our X-DF-A engine is the first ammonia-fuelled two-stroke marine engine to be installed on a vessel, with the first ships due to enter service early next year. Meanwhile successful sea trials for our first, methanol-fuelled X-DF-M engines have resulted in several more orders, due to their high efficiency and low emissions profile.

At the same time, we continue to advance our dual-fuel LNG engine platform, X-DF. The latest development, Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) technology, has already received more than 170 orders due to its proven ability to eliminate any compromise in diesel performance and further enhance efficiency when using LNG. Our latest shop test results show that methane slip has been reduced to around 0.7% with VCR technology—resulting in the lowest achievable overall greenhouse gas emissions for several vessel applications.

As the parallel demands for more cost-effective ship operations and reduced climate impact become more pressing, WinGD sees the role of retrofitting and engine service as essential. Many of the ships in service today will remain in service for long into the future, and ship operators will need to reduce their emissions using both technological and operational measures.

In terms of technology, this can be achieved by retrofitting new solutions such as the latest emissions abatement technologies, by converting engines for use with clean fuels, or by ensuring that the installed engines have the most efficient components, controls and tunings. WinGD’s Retrofit and Upgrades organization combines our OEM expertise with a strong network of project partners, ensuring that our customers can gain the maximum benefit from any new installation with the lowest project cost and shortest timeframe possible.

On the operational side, one of the most effective ways to minimise emissions—and to maintain profitable operations—is to keep the vessel’s main engine operating running well across its lifecycle.
